Scripture:
Matthew 6
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Commentary:
6:19 moth … rust … thieves. This concluding proverb (Luke 12:34) emphasizes the importance of the disposition of one’s heart, which throughout Scripture represents the center of one’s being and one’s deepest desires, including one’s reason, convictions, emotions, and will. The nature of one’s heart is reflected in the things that one values most.
6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven implies that people often have a choice between activities that lead to greater earthly reward in the present (cf. vv. 2, 5, 16) and those that store up greater future reward in heaven. Elsewhere in the Gospels the consequences of making the wrong choice are shown to be eternally disastrous (see Mark 8:36; Luke 12:20–21).
6:21 Throughout Scripture, the heart refers to the center of one’s being, involving one’s emotions, reason, and will.

Questions:
- One thing that is clear throughout scripture is that God is after undivided hearts. He wants us to worship no one and nothing else in this world. He won't tolerate any idols! And we can make idols out of just about anything in our lives. Money is one of those areas. Jesus said in Matthew 6 that we should store up treasures in heaven, not on earth. What does it look like to store up treasures on earth? In heaven? How can you more intentionally live for eternal, not earthly things?
- And Jesus also said that where our treasure is, our heart will also be. In other words, money reveals what we treasure and where our idols are. God is after our hearts AND where we spend and don't spend money. What are some idols that you have to fight to tear down in your own life? What would your bank account reveal about where your heart is?
Prayer Topics:
- That you would learn to store up treasures in heaven.
- That your heart would be about the work of Jesus.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
