Scripture:
Psalm 119
102 I haven’t turned away from your regulations,
for you have taught me well.
103 How sweet your words taste to me;
they are sweeter than honey.
104 Your commandments give me understanding;
no wonder I hate every false way of life.
Nun
105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path.
106 I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again:
I will obey your righteous regulations.

Commentary:
119:104 understanding. Trust in the Lord is necessary for fulfilling any of the wise ways of life taught in Proverbs; trusting the Lord is closely connected to “fearing” him (cf. 1:7; 2:5; 9:10; 15:33; 19:23; etc.). With all your heart indicates that trust goes beyond intellectual assent to a deep reliance on the Lord, a settled confidence in his care and his faithfulness to his Word. Do not lean on your own understanding further explains trusting in the Lord. One’s “understanding” in Proverbs is his perception of the right course of action. The wise will govern themselves by what the Lord himself declares, and will not set their own finite and often-mistaken understanding against his.
119:105 lamp … light. the image of light is that of God’s guidance; here that guidance makes the right path clear for those who pursue covenant faithfulness (see note on Prov. 4:18–19). he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. “The upright” is plural; now the verse speaks of each one of them. They show the character of the Lord himself (Ps. 111:4; see note on 112:3).
The common style of lamp in ancient Israel was a small bowl with a pinched lip which was used to support a wick.
119:106 sworn an oath. Perhaps like that of Neh. 10:29.

Questions:
- We must understand that it's always GOSPEL over GOVERNMENT. Does your faith inform your politics, or is it the other way around? How SHOULD a Christian decide what side of the issues to be on or which candidate to support? We go to the Bible. Some issues are nuanced and debatable. Some issues are simply NOT debatable. A Christian should vote for the agenda MOST in line with the CLEAREST teachings of Scripture... what scripture actually says, not how it can be twisted it to say what we want. Since neither agenda is completely in line with the teachings of Scripture, a Christian must go with the agenda that is MOST in line with the CLEAREST teachings in Scripture. Whether you consider yourself left, right or middle, can you honestly say that the truth of Scripture is the foundation of your political platform? Where does this create tensions?
- Everything in our lives, not just politics, must be measured against God's Word. Everything God wanted to reveal of himself to us, He did in Scripture. It contains every answer to every question you could ever ask. How often are you studying the Bible? How valuable are its pages to you?
Prayer Topics:
- That God would give you a fresh hunger for His Word.
- That you would learn to allow Scripture to be your guide in every area of life.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time, and Paul.
