Hello This is a Test

Friday Devo

Scripture:

Jeremiah 20
9 But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord
or speak in his name,
his word burns in my heart like a fire.
It’s like a fire in my bones!
I am worn out trying to hold it in!
I can’t do it!

Commentary:

20:9 God does not allow Jeremiah to cease preaching. burning fire … in my bones. When Jeremiah decides not to preach, he apparently feels intense (and possibly bodily) pain, as if the words are trying to burst forth. He cannot stop proclaiming God’s words.

Questions:

  • In Acts 18, Apollos taught with knowledge and accuracy, but he was also taught with enthusiasm and fervor. Some texts translate it as he was "boiling in the Spirit." He was like Jeremiah who said that God's Word "burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!" Can you relate to Jeremiah? If not, why not?

  • What every New Testament follower of Jesus should be after is KNOWLEDGE on FIRE. Consider this quote from Ajith Fernando: "But what of fervency? Is this a personality trait that only some have, which enables them to be good preachers? One’s personality may be an asset to preaching, but it is not what lies at the heart of fervency. Fervency comes from a confidence in the truth and power of what we proclaim. This, of course, is ignited by the Holy Spirit. Such confidence is necessary on our part, and it comes through lingering with the Word in trustful meditation, study, and obedience." We will be a people that love God with all of our hearts, souls, minds and strength. What is your level of passion for Scripture, prayer and the Gospel? Has your fire gone out? What are some ways we can stoke the flames of our hearts?

Prayer Topics:

  • That we would be on fire for the Lord.
  • That God would give us passion for the gospel.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
