Scripture Reading:

Genesis 22:13-14
13 Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

22:13 behind him was a ram. Although Abraham has passed the test, God provides a ram so that it may be sacrificed as a burnt offering. In Genesis such sacrifices are associated with solemn promises made by God (see 8:20–22). instead of his son. The fact that a ram died in the place of Isaac has led many Christian interpreters to see introduced here the principle of substitutionary atonement, which would later become a reality in the substitutionary sacrificial death of Christ on the cross, as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
22:14 Echoing Abraham’s earlier comment to Isaac in v. 8, the location is named The Lord will provide. On the basis of this, the belief developed (as it is said to this day) that God would provide the sacrifice necessary to atone for sin. the mount of the Lord. This probably denotes the hill on which the temple was later built in Jerusalem (see Isa. 2:3).

Study Questions:

  • When God came through with the ram, Abraham names that place "the Lord will provide." This is the point of the story... not that Abraham obeyed, but that God provided. This is all about God's commitment to Abraham. Think about some times in your life when you were obedient and God came through for you. How should that affect future decisions?

  • This story is not first and foremost about Abraham's commitment to God. It's actually about God's commitment to Abraham. That is why the mountain was commemorated as, "The Lord will provide," and not, "How Abraham obeyed." In the end, when you look back over your life, the thing that will stand out is not your great sacrifices for God, but his steadfast faithfulness to you. And the more you see that now, the more willing you will be to obey. God is faithful, and He has given EVERYTHING to you. God didn't even withhold His only Son from you, so what could you possibly withhold from Him?

Pray:

  • That you would be obedient, expecting Him to come through.
  • That you wouldn't withhold anything from Him.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead, proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
