Hello This is a Test

Friday Devo

Scripture:

1 Corinthians 12:18-27
18 But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. 19 How strange a body would be if it had only one part! 20 Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”
22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.
27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

Commentary:

12:18 God arranged. The Corinthians’ thinking will be corrected when they consider God’s sovereignty in assigning gifts (cf. also vv. 3, 11, 28).
12:20 many parts, yet one body. One of the key themes in these chapters is unity in the midst of diversity.
12:21 This probably reflects Paul’s assessment of how those Corinthians with the gift of tongues (and perhaps other more spectacular or “showy” gifts) were treating those with other gifts.
12:25–26 The purpose of the gifts is to build one another up and to care for one another, not to flaunt one’s own spirituality.

Questions:

  • Part of being a mature, healthy Christian means serving others. Jesus himself said that he didn't come to be served, but to serve. To follow Jesus is to have a heart to lay yourself down for the sake of others. Is serving others a part of your lifestyle? What can you do to up your service game?

  • Brandon spoke openly about some of the issues facing The City Church. The rapid growth has caused not only space issues, but the need for more people to get in the game. That could look like becoming a member, starting to give, volunteering, leading a group or serving in any number of ways. How is God speaking to you? How is he leading you to respond?

Prayer Topics:

  • That you would look for opportunities to serve others
  • That you would let the Lord lead you to your next step.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
