Acts 2:16-17
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

Commentary:
2:17 The last days are not just in the distant future but were inaugurated at Pentecost (cf. 1 Cor. 10:11; 2 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2; James 5:3; 2 Pet. 3:3) and will continue until Christ’s return. They are the “last days” in that the coming of the Messiah, long predicted in the OT, has now occurred. His saving death and resurrection have been accomplished, and now the work of the Holy Spirit in building the church is a key event in the history of salvation that needs to occur before Christ returns. Most rabbis believed that the Spirit had ceased speaking through human prophets with the last of the OT prophets (Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi). Joel’s prophecy of an outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh was understood as referring to a new messianic age. daughters. The women in the upper room participated in the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost, further confirming Joel’s prophecy.
Questions:
- Prophecy can be simply defined as God giving someone a message to give to someone else. There's nothing spooky or weird about it… God knows everything and he promises to speak to us through his Holy Spirit who has promised to lead us into all truth. 1 Corinthians 14 tells us that prophecy is for the purpose of strengthening, encouraging and comforting others in the church. Have you ever had someone give you a prophetic word, something someone felt God wanted to say to you?
- In discussing Joel's prophecy on Sunday, we talked not just about prophecy, but also dreams and visions. When we talk about dreams we are talking about a God-given dream, one that stands out as being from him. A vision is similar to a dream but something you experience when you are awake. What is your experience like when it comes to these gifts? Have you ever had a prophetic vision or dream? Have you ever asked God to speak to you in these ways?
Prayer Topics:
- That God would give you visions and dreams.
- That God would help you discern the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
