Scripture:

Acts 2:16-17
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

Commentary:

2:17 The last days are not just in the distant future but were inaugurated at Pentecost (cf. 1 Cor. 10:11; 2 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2; James 5:3; 2 Pet. 3:3) and will continue until Christ’s return. They are the “last days” in that the coming of the Messiah, long predicted in the OT, has now occurred. His saving death and resurrection have been accomplished, and now the work of the Holy Spirit in building the church is a key event in the history of salvation that needs to occur before Christ returns. Most rabbis believed that the Spirit had ceased speaking through human prophets with the last of the OT prophets (Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi). Joel’s prophecy of an outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh was understood as referring to a new messianic age. daughters. The women in the upper room participated in the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost, further confirming Joel’s prophecy.

Questions:

  • Peter quotes Joel, the Old Testament prophet, saying that in the last days God will pour out his Spirit on ALL people. The word used for "pour" is the image of a torrential downpour of rain on a parched earth. "All people" means every kind of person from every kind of place. It means male and female, young and old, rich and poor. This prophecy challenges every socio-economic barrier. This all means that with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, all believers, without distinction of gender, age, and social status, receive the wisdom and ability to know God. You have complete access to God through the Holy Spirit. What are you doing with this privilege? Are you taking full advantage of this access to the Father?

  • The Spirit that hovered over the waters of the new creation, that raised Christ from the dead, is IN YOU as a believer! What are you doing with this power and wisdom that is within you? If you were constantly aware that the God of the universe is WITH you and IN you, would it change your behaviors at all? What would be different if you lived in this reality?

Prayer Topics:

  • That you would come boldly to the throne of the Father.
  • That you would live like you have the Holy Spirit of God inside you.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
(Mark 3:21; John 8:58, 10:30-33, 14:9-11; Acts 9:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:2-3; James 1:1)
