Scripture:
Acts 1:15-17
15 During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them. 16 “Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David. 17 Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.”

Commentary:
1:15 Throughout chs. 1–15 Peter is the spokesman for the apostles.
1:16 The Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David is one of the clearest affirmations in Scripture that the Bible is the inspired word of God. The Holy Spirit “spoke” through David’s mouth in the sense that David’s written words were inspired by the third person of the Trinity (God the Holy Spirit) foretelling events that took place a thousand years later (see v. 20; cf. Ps. 69:25; 109:8).

Questions:
- Jesus' followers also used this time to find a replacement for Judas. Peter took the lead in this process. First he pointed to Scripture that not only predicted Judas' betrayal, but also that his role of apostle would be replaced. So they made this decision TOGETHER through the help of SCRIPTURE. What a great example for us! What does the decision making process look like in your own life? How might it affect your choices if you were to only make decisions after applying God's Word?
- In order to apply God's Word and wisdom to your situation, you must know it. And to know it, you must read and study it. We talk often about the need for every Christian to have a knowledge of the full counsel of God's Word. This is different than just a meme or devotional knowledge. This involves reading and studying the original meaning and context. It's why we provide you with commentaries as well as the applicable verses. What would it look like for you to step up your Scripture study?
Pray:
- That you would strive to know God's Word.
- That you would be faithful to apply his Word to your life and decisions.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
