Scripture:
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
6 Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure.

Commentary:
9:6 sows bountifully. Paul expands a well-known proverb: “You reap what you sow” (e.g., Job 4:8; Ps. 126:5; Prov. 22:8; Jer. 12:13; Matt. 6:26; John 4:36–37; Gal. 6:7). God does not command Christians to give a certain amount, but he provides opportunities to give generously. Those who sow generously will also reap bountifully in terms of bearing fruit for God’s kingdom and in other ways as well (2 Cor. 9:11).
Questions:
- Paul then gives an example of a farmer who is planting seeds. A small amount of seeds only yields a small crop, but generous planting brings forth a generous crop. Each person must decide for themselves how much to give. In other words, they should led by the Holy Spirit as to how much they should give. How often are you praying over how much you should be giving? Or do you just set it and forget it?
- This analogy goes even deeper. Where do you get the seed to begin with? They didn't just go buy seed. They got their seed from the harvest. So they could choose to eat the whole harvest OR choose to plant it back in the ground with produces even more! You see the tension? How much do I eat for myself, and how much to I reinvest in the next harvest? The more generously we sow, or give, the more opportunity there will be for blessing. How much are YOU willing to invest into a spiritual harvest? What would it look like to sow generously?
Pray:
- That you would let God lead you in how much to give.
- That you would learn to be a good steward of all God has given you and sow generously.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
