Hello This is a Test

Thursday Devo

Scripture:

Philippians 2:3-4
3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

Commentary:

2:3–4 There is always a temptation to be like Paul’s opponents in 1:17 and operate in a spirit of rivalry, looking to advance one’s own agenda. Such conceit (lit., “vainglory”) is countered by counting others more significant than yourselves. Paul realizes that everyone naturally looks out for his or her own interests. The key is to take that same level of concern and apply it also to the interests of others. Such radical love is rare, so Paul proceeds to show its supreme reality in the life of Christ (2:5–11).

Questions:

  • Take a minute to read through Genesis 13. Lot was not only financially motivated in Genesis 13, he was also selfishly motivated. He chose what was best for HIM despite the fact that his decision meant having to wrong his uncle. He proves that he has the opposite of a generous heart. He thinks only about HIS prosperity and no one else's. We all can easily slide into selfishness if we aren't careful and live only for ourselves. Think about the connection between what is in our heart to the choices we make. When you make decisions, big or small, are they all about you and your family? Or do you make sure you are considering everyone else?

  • As always, Jesus is our perfect example. If anyone had a good reason to be selfish or to use His status to take advantage of people, it was Jesus. After all, He was God in a human body. But that was the opposite of what He did. He came to this earth to serve others, not to be served. And He ultimately gave EVERYTHING for us when we deserved NOTHING. Take a minute and ask God to search your heart. Do you treat others the way Jesus did? How often are you intentionally taking a back seat in order to serve or honor someone else?

Pray:

  • That you would consider others when you make decisions.
  • That you would look for ways to honor and serve others.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
(Matthew 7:24-27; John 14:6)
