Hello This is a Test

Tuesday Devo

Scripture:

Luke 24:8-12
8 Then they remembered that he had said this. 9 So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened. 11 But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. 12 However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.

Commentary:

24:8 They remembered his words, i.e., his prophecies of 9:22, 44; 18:32–33.
24:9 the eleven. Judas is now missing (cf. v. 33; Matt. 28:16; Acts 1:26). And to all the rest includes the two disciples of Luke 24:13–25 and the 120 of Acts 1:15.
24:10 It was Mary … and the other women indicates that at least five women went to the tomb. For apostles, see Luke 6:13.
24:11 They (the apostles) did not initially believe the women.
24:12 Peter rose and ran. Cf. John 20:3–6. For the linen cloths by themselves, see note on John 20:6. he went home marveling. This can be associated with unbelief (Luke 11:38; Acts 13:41) but usually involves a positive response (see Luke 1:21). Cf. 24:34.

Questions:

  • Contrary to what many might think, the disciples were very slow to believe what the women had told them. They were skeptical. Darrell Bock said, “Though the church proclaims the resurrection confidently today, the original witnesses had to be convinced that it had occurred. Resurrection had been promised by Scripture and by Jesus, but only slowly, grudgingly and methodically did the disciples come to see that it had come to pass.” They were skeptical, and we would be to! It must have seemed like craziness to them, the thought of a dead man coming back to life. They didn't believe until they saw him themselves. That is the opposite of blind faith. What, if anything, does this do for YOUR faith in the risen Savior? Does it make a difference to have a faith that is based on reasonable evidence?

  • For every Christian, it is important to know WHY you believe WHAT you believe. We should know how to give an answer to why we have the faith we have. If someone challenged YOUR beliefs in Jesus, what would you say? Would you be comfortable giving an answer? If not, how can you prepare yourself?

Pray:

  • That you would have confidence that your faith if based in reasonable evidence, just like the disciples.
  • That you would prepare yourself to be questioned so that you're ready to give an answer.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
