Scripture:
Genesis 12:10-13
10 At that time a severe famine struck the land of Canaan, forcing Abram to go down to Egypt, where he lived as a foreigner. 11 As he was approaching the border of Egypt, Abram said to his wife, Sarai, “Look, you are a very beautiful woman. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife. Let’s kill him; then we can have her!’ 13 So please tell them you are my sister. Then they will spare my life and treat me well because of their interest in you.”

Commentary:
12:11–13 Fearful that his life will be endangered because of Sarai’s beauty, Abram devises a ruse, based on a half-truth (see 20:12). Abram’s selfish actions imply that he thinks God is unable to protect him. Yet when the plan backfires, it is the Lord who rescues him (12:17).
Questions:
- In Genesis 12, we see Abraham’s faith start to slip. He questions whether or not God is capable of protecting him. We all have these highs and lows in our walk with the Lord. We have mountaintop experiences where our faith is at an all-time high, but just as quickly we can find ourselves hopeless in a pit of doubt and despair. Reflect on some of those high faith moments where you thought God could do anything. What was it that led to these moments?
- Now think about times when you, like Abraham, doubted God. Maybe not openly or verbally, but through your actions. Maybe you tried to solve a problem on your own, in your own power, rather than coming to Him in prayer. Maybe instead of believing and praying for a miracle you just gave up. Maybe you've been tempted to doubt His goodness in a difficult season. We can all relate to Abraham in this moment of his life. How can you grow your faith? What is hold you back from believing that God is a promise keeper?
Pray:
- That you would remember that God can do anything.
- That you would look for chances to trust God and grow your faith.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
6. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
