Scripture:
Romans 8:28-30
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.

Commentary:
8:28 God weaves everything together for good for his children. The “good” in this context does not refer to earthly comfort but conformity to Christ (v. 29), closer fellowship with God, bearing good fruit for the kingdom, and final glorification (v. 30).
8:29 Verses 29–30 explain why those who believe in Christ can be assured that all things work together for good: God has always been doing good for them, starting before creation (the distant past), continuing in their conversion (the recent past), and then on to the day of Christ’s return (the future). Foreknew reaches back to the OT, where the word “know” emphasizes God’s special choice of, or covenantal affection for, his people (e.g., Gen. 18:19; Jer. 1:5; Amos 3:2). See Rom. 11:2, where “foreknew” functions as the contrast to “rejected,” showing that it emphasizes God’s choosing his people (see also 1 Pet. 1:2, 20). God also predestined (i.e., predetermined) that those whom he chose beforehand would become like Christ.
8:30 The chain that begins with the word “foreknew” in v. 29 cannot be broken. Those who are predestined by God are also called effectively to faith through the gospel (see 2 Thess. 2:14). And all those who are called are also justified (declared to be right in God’s sight). Because not all who are invited to believe are actually justified, the “calling” here cannot refer to merely a general invitation but must refer to an effective call that creates the faith necessary for justification (Rom. 5:1). All those who are justified will also be glorified (receive resurrection bodies) on the last day. Paul speaks of glorification as if it were already completed, since God will certainly finish the good work he started (cf. Phil. 1:6).

Questions:
- Satan is a formidable enemy, but we don't have to fear him. Why? Because we are on the winning team. Satan can WORK, but Jesus still WINS! Jesus' death on the cross was not because Satan won. It was all part of God's sovereign plan to save the world. This is how God operates. Like the story of Joseph, who was betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused of rape, thrown into prison... but God was with him. He eventually rose to #2 in command in the whole kingdom. And what did he tell his brothers as they trembled and knelt before him? "What you intended for evil, God intends for good." Do you need to stop asking, "Why God?!" and instead ask Him WHAT He might be trying to do in and through you?
- Romans 8:28 is often misunderstood and applied. This verse isn't promising that things will go well for believers or that we'll get the things we want or even that "things will work out." God never promises us nothing but ease and blessing. In fact, Jesus promised us the opposite... He promised us trouble. But He tells us to take heart, because He has overcome the world. When we go through difficulty in life we must have hope that God is working those situations for our good and for His glory. Is there anything going on right now in your life where you need to trust His sovereignty?
Pray:
- That you would move past "why?" and instead ask God what He might be wanting to do in and through you.
- That you would trust God has your best in mind.

6. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
