Hello This is a Test

Scripture:

Luke 20:41-44
41 Then Jesus presented them with a question. “Why is it,” he asked, “that the Messiah is said to be the son of David? 42 For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
43 until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.’
44 Since David called the Messiah ‘Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”

Commentary:

20:41–44 Whose Son Is the Christ? How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? Jesus answers his own question: Scripture teaches that Jesus is more than David’s son. Jesus quotes Ps. 110:1: David … says … The Lord (the God of Israel) said to my Lord (the Messiah). Jesus’ point is not to deny that the Messiah is a descendant of David (e.g., Ps. 2:1–12; 89:1–52; Isa. 9:1–7; Jer. 23:5–6; Ezek. 34:23–24). The issue is that, in this passage (i.e., Ps. 110:1–5), there is no mention of the Messiah being the son of David; rather, the Messiah is here the “Lord of David." Sit at my right hand. The Lord (Messiah) is given the place of honor. Since David calls the Messiah his Lord, how is he his son? (that is, how can Jesus be only David’s son?). The Messiah is, in fact, greater than his father David, and thus David calls him Lord.

Questions:

  • God wrote Himself into HIS story. Brandon talked on Sunday about how Hamlet could only know Shakespeare if Shakespeare wrote himself in to the story. In the same way, we can only know God because God wrote Himself into HIS story in Jesus… He did this that we might know Him, His will and His ways. Have you ever thought about it this way? What does it mean to you to know that God actually WANTS you to know Him? How much more does it make you want to read about and study God's Word to learn more about the Author?

  • We SHOULD live for HIS story, but we think we want to write our own story. Just like the religious elite in Jesus' day, some of us have been so wrapped up in OUR story that we have missed THE story. Jesus is challenging us to live for GOD'S story. Live for a story that's bigger than yourself! Here are a few questions to ponder: Are you the pharisee or the widow? Maybe somewhere in between? What is keeping your heart from being like the widow's? Do you live for Him and His kingdom, or for you and your kingdom? Do you long for His glory or the praise of men? Does anything need to change in your life and priorities?

Pray:

  • That you would seek to know His will and His ways.
  • That you would live for HIS story.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
(Matthew 7:24-27; John 14:6)
