Thursday Devo

**Because of Father's Day, this week's content will be husband/father/parent focused**

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 3:18
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Commentary:

3:18 with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord. The word translated “beholding” (Gk. katoptrizō) can mean “behold” or “reflect” or “look at in a mirror,” and commentators support all three views. In this context, however, the connection with a mirror does not seem to be necessary to the word, and the meaning “behold” seems more consistent with the idea of having the veil removed and therefore being able to see God’s glory, in contrast to the unbelieving Jews who still have a veil blocking their vision. Paul continues his comparison of all Christians (we all) with Moses by using Moses’ experience in Ex. 34:34 as the key to understanding the experience of the Christian. As a result of beholding the Lord through the ministry of the Spirit, the believer is being transformed (a process of sanctification over time, not an instantaneous change) into the same image of God that was distorted at the fall (see Gen. 1:26–27; 2 Cor. 4:4; 5:17; also 1 John 3:2). The “image” of God includes every way in which humans are like God, such as their moral character, their true knowledge, their many God-given abilities, and their dominion over creation (cf. Gen. 1:26–28), to be exercised with dependence on God as the Creator and giver of all things (see 1 Cor. 4:7).

Questions:

  • No matter how badly you want it, you can't be a GOOD dad unless you're a GODLY dad first. And no matter where you're falling short, the answer IS NOT, "I'll do better! I'll try harder!" The answer is letting your Heavenly Father change your heart. And that starts with where your focus is. Whatever you are BEHOLDING is what you are BECOMING. Don't like what you're becoming? Then change what you're beholding! This applies to everyone, not just dads or parents. What does this mean for you?

  • Being transformed by the Spirit and Word of God is what every believer should be after. That starts with getting into scripture and replacing our thoughts with the Truth. Romans 12 calls this being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then, slowly but surely, the Holy Spirit works and moves on the inside of you, weeding out anything that doesn't please Him and replacing it with the fruits of the Spirit. This is what maturing in your faith should look like. As you look back over the past year or two, can you see growth in your walk with Him? Are you more spiritually mature today than you were then? Are you trending in the right direction? What needs to change?

Pray:

  • That you would "behold" the right things.
  • That you would be doing what's necessary to grow in your relationship with God.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
(Luke 1:1-4; Acts 26:26; 1 John 1:1-4, Josephus, Clement, Hegesippus, Tertullian, Origen, Polycarp)
