This Week's City 7:

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
(Luke 1:1-4; Acts 26:26; 1 John 1:1-4, Josephus, Clement, Hegesippus, Tertullian, Origen, Polycarp)

Ice-Breaker:

How does your parenting style compare to YOUR parents? What have you improved upon?

Discussion Questions:

Have someone read Ephesians 5:25-31 aloud.

  • Scripture teaches that God ordained that husbands/fathers would be responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of their families. Pretty much every dad WANTS to be a GOOD dad. Some even want to be a GODLY dad. But if you want to be a godly father, you must first be a godly HUSBAND. Ephesians 5 lays out what this should look like. Husbands are to lay down their lives for their wives, just like Jesus did for us. Clayton shared this quote with us on Sunday... "The Christian husband displays what he thinks of Christ by the way he treats his wife." Wives, talk about some ways your husband loves you in this way. Husbands, how do you need to grow in this? If unmarried, is there anyone in your life or past that is a good example of this kind of love?

  • Ephesians 6:4 says that fathers shouldn't provoke their children to anger by the way they treat them. Instead they should bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. This means that godly discipline and instruction is more important than sports or education or anything else. Fathers, are you ever too harsh with your kids? Is this an area where growth is needed?

  • A godly father knows the difference between PRIMARY and SECONDARY things, and he prioritizes the PRIMARY... namely the discipleship of his family. Voddie Boucham said, "If I teach my kids to keep their eye on the ball and not on Jesus, I've failed. Parents, how are we doing in this area?

  • No matter how badly you want it, you can't be a GOOD dad unless you're a GODLY dad first. And no matter where you're falling short, the answer IS NOT, "I'll do better! I'll try harder!" The answer is letting your Heavenly Father change your heart. And that starts with where your focus is. Whatever you are BEHOLDING is what you are BECOMING. Don't like what you're becoming? Then change what you're beholding! This applies to everyone, not just dads or parents. What does this mean for you?

Prayer Topics:

  • That dads would let Jesus transform their hearts.
  • That dads would become godly husbands and fathers.
  • That we would all pay attention to what we are beholding.
