Hello This is a Test

Scripture Reading:

Luke 19:36-38
36 As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. 37 When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”

Commentary:

19:36 spread … Cloaks on the road symbolized the crowd’s submission to Jesus as king. An act of homage.
19:37 On the Mount of Olives. began to rejoice (cf. Zech. 9:9) and praise God. This came primarily from Jesus’ disciples. all the mighty works that they had seen. The miracles they had seen recently (e.g., in Luke 9:51–19:27), and many more as well.
19:38 Blessed … in the name of the Lord! A blessing from Ps. 118:26 that pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem received. Hosanna (Hb. “Save!” or “Please save!”; see Ps. 118:25). Here “Hosanna” points to the celebration of Jesus as a political, Davidic messiah (cf. 2 Sam. 7:14; Isa. 9:1–21; 11:1–16; Jer. 23:1–8).

Questions:

  • In verse 28 of Chapter 19, Luke gives us a story we are all familiar with. Jesus makes His return to Jerusalem to crowds of people praising him. They line the streets, laying garments and palm branches in front of Him. Remember, they have no idea Jesus is coming to die. They think he's coming to be crowned a king. They had a preconceived idea about how God would accomplish all that was written about in the prophets, but they were way off. So many of them missed it altogether. We can all be guilty of this in our own lives. Has there been a time when God accomplished something in YOUR life that was in a much different way than you expected?

  • The crowds, not Jesus, chose to lay down palm branches. Luke actually doesn't mention this, but instead focuses on Jesus' choice of a donkey to ride on. The crowd may have been shouting, "hosanna," and bowing down, but they were expecting the wrong kind of king and the wrong kind of rescue. The rescue Jesus was about to make was through a cross. We can tend to give these crowds a hard time for their seemingly wavering faith, but it's not hard to see how this could happen. How would YOU react if you put your faith in this supposed Messiah, only to watch Him be executed? That might be enough to shake anyone's faith. Has there ever been something in your life, or something you're going through now, that has caused doubts to creep in? How can you navigate these doubts in order to rest in the sovereignty of God?

Pray:

  • That you would learn to trust God, no matter your circumstances.
  • That you would rest in His sovereignty.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
(Mark 3:21; John 8:58, 10:30-33, 14:9-11; Acts 9:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:2-3; James 1:1)
