Hello This is a Test

Friday Devo

Scripture:

Luke 6:35-36
...and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. 36 You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.

Commentary:

You will be sons does not mean “you will become sons” but “you will demonstrate that you are sons” by imitating God’s care and compassion even for those who are evil. Most High - This name for the true God comes from Gen. 14:18–22 (see note on Gen. 14:18), where Melchizedek, king of Salem, identifies Yahweh as “God Most High” (cf. Balaam [also a Gentile], Num. 24:16: “the Most High”; “the Almighty”). It became a common title for the Lord among the monotheistic Israelites, especially in the Psalms. (In Dan. 3:26; 4:24, 34 it is the title for God that both Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar hold in common, and is a favored name in the intertestamental book of Sirach.) Whereas John is the “prophet of the Most High” (Luke 1:76), Jesus is the “Son of the Most High.” He is the promised successor to the throne of David (see 2 Sam. 7:12–13, 16).

Questions:

  • Jesus told us that they way the world will know we belong to him would be the way we love each other. We are to basically PROVE that we belong to God by ACTING as his children should act. We should be imitating God's care and compassion, even for those who are evil. This is the way true children of the Father act. Do people around you, even those that don't know you well, know that you are a Christian because you attend church? Or maybe because you talk about God sometimes? Or do they know you belong to God because of your love for others? Does the way you treat people, even those who dislike you, stand out to everyone? What needs to change?

  • "Real love is rooted in the Gospel of God." Jesus loved us, died for us, chose us, even when we were still his enemies. When we love the way Jesus loved us, we look more and more like Him. This kind of love is only possible if our hearts have been transformed by God's Spirit. I should love my enemies because God loved an enemy like me. The ability to love my enemies is found in remembering the greatest act of love... God loving ME. Do you need some growth in this area?

Pray:

  • That you would be known for your love for others.
  • That you would love others because of God's extravagant love for you.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
(Matthew 24:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Revelation 22:18-19)
