Scripture:
Luke 17:15-19
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.”

Commentary:
17:15–16a One leper turned back (cf. 2 Kings 5:15), praising God with a loud voice (a favorite Lukan expression; cf. Luke 4:33; 8:28; 19:37, etc.). The leper fell on his face (cf. 5:12), giving Jesus thanks. Elsewhere in the NT such giving of thanks (Gk. eucharisteō) is always directed to God (in every one of 37 other occurrences of this verb).
17:16b Now he was a Samaritan. The noun “he” is emphasized in the Greek; placing this statement later in the story also serves to emphasize that the only grateful leper was a Samaritan (on Samaritans, see 9:52; 10:33).
17:19 The Samaritan’s faith has made him well (lit., “saved” him; cf. the same Gk. verb in 7:50; 8:48; 18:42), so that the healing here was more than physical.

Questions:
- After the leper praised God "with a loud voice," he fell at the feet of Jesus and worshiped Him. WORSHIP brings INTIMACY with God. The Samaritan had started off at a distance but ended up at the feet of his Savior. Worship is important because it reestablishes our relationship with God on its proper terms. It resets our hearts. It's about humbling yourself before God, bowing the knee, acknowledging that He alone is great and we are not. It's about vocalizing and recognizing the truth of the gospel and that we are nothing apart from him. Do you ever include worship in your quiet times or Bible study? How might this be beneficial? How might it have an impact on your day?
- When it comes to corporate worship in church, it's much more than just singing. With so many denominations and "styles of worship," I think a lot of people are left confused as to what it is supposed to look like. Is there a right or wrong way to worship? Yes... there most certainly is. No matter your upbringing, personality or preferences, the ONLY way to worship God is with EVERYTHING you have. Depending on your personality that might look different for different people. But the result is the same... genuine, uninhibited and undistracted worship that is pleasing to God. How engaged are you when we worship together on Sundays? Are you uninhibited in your worship? Or are you distracted? Are you a hand-raiser? Are you ever preoccupied with what others might think of you if you were to sing out loud or lift your hands in worship? What would "taking a step forward" in worship look like for you?
Pray:
- That you would find more opportunities to spend time worshiping God.
- That you would learn to pour yourself out before the Lord during corporate worship.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
