Hello This is a Test

Tuesday Devo

Scripture:

Luke 17:1-3
One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting! 2 It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin. 3 So watch yourselves!

Commentary:

17:1 God has ordained that temptations to sin are sure to come, but that does not excuse any individual from being the cause of temptations to others, for Jesus says, woe to the one through whom they come (cf. 22:22; Acts 2:23; 4:27–28).
17:2 millstone. A round stone used for grinding grain (here probably weighing hundreds of pounds, propelled by a donkey walking in circles on a track). better for him … than that. Drowning with a millstone around one’s neck has less serious consequences (because they may not be eternal consequences) than causing one of these little ones (who believe in Christ or who have begun to follow him in some way) to sin (cf. Matt. 18:6).

Questions:

  • In Luke 17:1, Jesus is warning us that sin, false teachers and bitterness want to sink us. So how do we stay afloat? Clayton gave us three different lifejackets to save us from sinking. The first one was ORTHODOXY, which is believing RIGHTLY about God. Jesus is warning against people that might lead others astray through false teaching. Are there people in your life that are blindly falling into this trap, choosing to believe things that don't jive with God's Word? How do we make sure we don't fall prey to false teachings?

  • It would be arrogant of us to make up things about God when He has clearly revealed himself through His Word and His Son. God will eventually tell you things you don't like or don't want to be true or that don't sound good to you. In other words, if your "god" never disagrees with you, you don't have a God! Have there been times in your life when you discovered that you had been believing wrongly about God or Scripture? When was the last time you were truly convicted through reading God's Word?

Pray:

  • That you would stay vigilant when it comes to teaching you listen to.
  • That you would remember God's Word trumps our thoughts and feelings every time.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

6. Is the Bible God’s Word? Jesus proved He is God by rising from the dead and said the Old Testament was God’s Word and gave authority to the Apostles to write the words of the New Testament, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so that all the words of the Bible are God’s Word.
