Hello This is a Test

Monday Devo

Scripture:

Luke 14:27-30
27 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’

Commentary:

Crucifixion is a shocking metaphor for discipleship. A disciple must deny himself (die to self-will), take up his cross (embrace God’s will, no matter the cost), and follow Christ.
The goal of self-denial (cf. 14:30, 31, 72) and taking up one’s cross is not pathological self-abasement or a martyr complex but being free to follow the Messiah (1:18; 2:13). Self-denial means letting go of self-determination (cf. Ps. 49:6–8) and replacing it with obedience to and dependence on the Messiah.

Questions:

  • In this passage, Jesus has no problem letting his followers know up front just how difficult it's going to be to actually follow him. He doesn't mince his words, he's not hiding anything, he pulls no punches. He clearly lays out the cost of following him. There is a real cost to discipleship. The first of cost he mentions is a cost of POPULARITY. Jesus had large crowds following him until his teaching got to be too much for them. They left in droves. Has following Jesus ever cost you YOUR popularity? Has being a Christian ever cost you relationships?

  • Fans of Jesus are excited about Jesus loving them, but they don't want him messing with their lives. Fans seek affirmational love, but followers submit themselves to transformational love. In your own words, what is the difference between the two? Has there been a time in your life that you would've been defined as more of a fan than a follower?

Pray:

  • That you would be willing to sacrifice relationships to follow Jesus.
  • That you would be a follower instead of just a fan.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
(Mark 3:21; John 8:58, 10:30-33, 14:9-11; Acts 9:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:2-3; James 1:1)
