Scripture Reading:

Hebrews 12:1-2
And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

12:2 founder. See note on 2:10. perfecter. Through his atoning work, Christ’s perfection leads to the perfection of his people (which will be realized fully on the last day). for the joy that was set before him endured. The cross of Christ represents the greatest suffering in history, for Jesus not only suffered physically but also experienced God’s just wrath in taking upon himself the sin of the world. Still, the promise of future reward and joy gave Jesus strength to suffer. despising the shame. Crucifixion, performed naked and in public, and inflicting prolonged pain on the victim, was intended to cause shame as well as death. at the right hand. See Heb. 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12.

Study Questions:

  • The first takeaway on Sunday was that Jesus ENDURED the fire for you. He was slaughtered so we wouldn't have to be. The Father turned his back on the SON so he wouldn't have to turn his back on US for all of eternity. Just spend some time thinking about how grateful you are for God's grace and for the unmatched love of Jesus, who was willing to suffer so much for you.

  • Sometimes we tend to make walking this Christian walk more difficult than it has to be. We over-complicate things with religious rules, do's and don't-do's, trying to get to church, striving to pray or read our Bibles more. In reality, all we need is a daily dose of the Gospel. When we truly grasp the gravity of what he did for us on that cross, and that he did it for US, whether we would choose to accept him or not...something beautiful happens. The overflow of this Gospel-realization will automatically create the right responses in us. We'll walk in more humility and grace. We'll naturally be in a state of prayer and worship for who he is and what he's done. We'll want our lives to please him and bring him glory. We'll want to share this beautiful truth with everyone we meet. It would just be... simple. And that's just how he intended it. Have you overcomplicated your relationship with God? How would your life and attitudes be different if you reminded yourself of the Gospel every morning? Start today!

Pray:

That you would remind yourself of the Gospel every day.
That you would, as a result, walk in humility, grace and worship.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

3. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? Since “all have sinned” and the “wages of sin is death,” Jesus had to die on the cross to pay the fine for my sin so I could be right with God.
