Ice-Breaker:
Are you someone that gets into New Year's resolutions? Have you ever kept one? What resolution are you going to not keep this year?
Discussion Question:
- So far in the book of Luke, he has been painting a clear picture for us about what was most important to Jesus. He's basically mentoring us! Any wise person will tell you that, as a follower of Jesus, we all need spiritual mentors. This would be someone of the same sex that is probably older than you, definitely more spiritually mature than you, that you can start an intentional relationship with for the purpose of spiritual growth and maturity. Do you have a relationship like this? If so, how has it benefited you? If not, is there someone in your life that fits this criteria that you could ask to mentor you?
- Jesus was constantly investing in people. Every relationship in his life was intentional and on purpose. He poured into so many people around him, including the 12. But he went even deeper wither Peter, James and John. While we need to be mentored by someone else, we also need to be doing the same for others. Disciples make disciples. In our walk with the Lord, we all need certain kinds of relationships... we all need fathers, we all need brothers, we all need sons. In other words, we need to mentored, we need peers that we do life with, and we need someone behind us in the journey that we can be intentional with. Do you have relationships in your life like this? Are you pouring into someone else?
- Jesus also had a heart for social outcasts. He intentionally sought out those in the margins. He ministered to the immoral woman, the tax collector. He tells the story of the prodigal son, showing us the heart of the Father. He gave the parable of the good Samaritan. While the religious leaders of the day distanced themselves from such people, Jesus leaned in and invested. Which approach does your life and relationships most closely resemble? Are you intentional about seeking out people in the margins?
- One thing that is clear through Luke's writings is that Jesus valued prayer. He prayed all the time. He made it a priority. He "often" withdrew to pray. If Jesus, who was God in a body, thought it was important to take time out of his day to pray, don't you think you should as well? How much of a priority do you put on your prayer life? Could that be an area you should invest in starting this new year?
- 'Tis the season for New Year's resolutions. In terms of your faith, where can you take a next step? Prayer? Bible study? Sharing your faith? Where is the most immediate need for growth?
Prayer Topics:
- That you would seek out a mentor.
- That you would find someone to pour into.
- That you would seek out those in the margins.
- That you would develop a heart for prayer.
