Scripture Reading:
Luke 1:26-27
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
1:26 sixth month. The sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy (v. 24). Luke’s specifying that Nazareth was a city of Galilee suggests that his intended readers were not from Palestine and would therefore be unfamiliar with the city’s location (cf. 4:31). Excavations at Nazareth have located tombs, olive presses, wells, and vaulted cells for wine and oil storage, indicating that the village was a small agricultural settlement. However, Nazareth was located on a road leading from nearby Sepphoris into Samaria. The current Church of the Annunciation lies atop previous early Byzantine church structures and caves (from the 4th century or possibly earlier); these commemorated the early life of Jesus and his family.
1:27 Virgin describes Mary’s state both before the conception and during pregnancy (Matt. 1:25). betrothed. A legally binding engagement breakable only by divorce (Matt. 1:19). Joseph is a descendant of David (cf. Matt. 1:16, 20; Luke 1:32–33; 2:4; 3:23–38).

Study Questions:
- The first point from Sunday was, "Jesus is the PROMISED King." This King was to be a descendent of David, which was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophesies. God is giving Jesus the throne of his ancestor, David. But Jesus resisted becoming an earthly king, which is what everyone expected. He said that his kingdom is not of this world. So Jesus is STILL our promised King that will rule the earth from his throne in new Jerusalem after he returns. Think about the state of our world right now. It's hard to imagine it getting any worse! But how comforting is it to know that one day, very soon, Jesus will make all things right? What might it be like to live for eternity under the rule and reign of this King?
- When Gabriel appeared to Mary, he was about to lay some heavy news on her. Her world was about to turn upside down. It's interesting that God's message for her starts out with, "The Lord is with you!" How cool is that?! He was with Mary, and he is with you. No matter what you will face today or what is coming at you tomorrow, the Lord is with you. Does knowing this fact lower your anxiety level about what might be around the corner? What might you be able to face down and conquer if the God of the universe is with you?
Pray:
- That you would live with the hope of a bright future with Jesus.
- That you would always remember God is with you no matter what you face.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
