Scripture Reading:

Isaiah 9:6
6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor...

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

9:6 to us. A gift of divine grace to sinners. a child … a son. This is the invincible figure striding across the world stage, taking gracious command, according to vv. 4–5 (cf. Ps. 2:7–9; Luke 1:32). Isaiah presents the events as if it were the time of the child’s arrival, with an expectation of what he will achieve (Isa. 9:7). Wonderful Counselor. A “counselor” is one who is able to make wise plans (cf. 11:2). He is a ruler whose wisdom is beyond merely human capabilities, unlike intelligent but foolish Ahaz (cf. 28:29).

Study Questions:

  • Next, the coming child is the Advent of TRUTH. He will be called "Wonderful Counselor." A counselor is one who is able to make wise plans. He is a ruler whose wisdom is beyond human capabilities. His counsel is wonderful TRUTH that brings joy and pleasure to our lives. In Psalms 16 and 19, David says God's law is wonderful, perfect, and that it revives the soul. He said it makes him wise, brings him joy. He says it's fair, more desirable than gold, sweeter than honey. Is that the way you grew up looking at the Bible? Is that your view of Scripture right now?

  • We talk a lot about how crucial it is for us to have a deep knowledge of God's Word. Most of us settle for a cursory knowledge, or maybe a few memorized scriptures that make for good instagram posts. It is our prayer for every member of our CityFam to develop a hunger for his Word and a desire to study it on a deeper level. Can you truly say you are passionate about knowing God's Word? How big of a priority is scripture study in your life? Does something need to change in your daily routine?

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

6. Is the Bible God’s Word? Jesus proved He is God by rising from the dead and said the Old Testament was God’s Word and gave authority to the Apostles to write the words of the New Testament, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so that all the words of the Bible are God’s Word.
(Matthew 5:18; Luke 24:27, 44; John 14:25-26, 15:27, 16:12-13, 17:20; Acts 2:42; Ephesians 3:5; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21)
