Scripture Reading:
Luke 12:8-9
8 “I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels. 9 But anyone who denies me here on earth will be denied before God’s angels.
8 “I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels. 9 But anyone who denies me here on earth will be denied before God’s angels.
Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
12:9 denies me before men. A Christian can easily avoid persecution by denying that he or she is Jesus’ disciple. But the true disciple does not fear death and will publicly acknowledge and confess Jesus. whoever denies me. The eternal consequences for those who deny Christ, in fact, will be far worse than the persecution that they sought to avoid.
Study Questions:
- The second takeaway from Sunday was that we should CONFESS Jesus. Jesus said if we acknowledge him here on earth, he'll acknowledge us before God. Confessing Jesus is more than just a verbal commitment. It's about self-denial and submitting all aspects of your life to His control, as a slave to his master. It's about saying to him, "All I am is yours!" Is there a time in your life that you would've called yourself a Christian, but you weren't fully submitted to him? What are the differences in these two types of lifestyles, and how do you know the difference? What are the fruits of each of these lives?
- Jesus says that if we will acknowledge him, he will acknowledge us before the Father. Take some time to imagine this. While you were still a sinner, before you turned to Jesus, while you were still lost in complete rebellion against God, he chose you. He willingly laid down his life for you even though you didn't deserve it in any way. He stands up, looks at you, calls you by name, and says, he/she is with me. How amazing is that? Take some extra time today to thank God for his grace and unconditional love. Live in grateful humility today!
Pray:
- That you would be fully submitted to Jesus.
- That you would be grateful and humbled by his love for you.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
