Scripture Reading:
Luke 11:37-38
37 As Jesus was speaking, one of the Pharisees invited him home for a meal. So he went in and took his place at the table. 38 His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
11:37 Pharisee. The Pharisees were the most influential of the three major Jewish sects.
reclined at table. The usual posture at a banquet or Sabbath meal (see note on Matt. 26:20).
11:38 wash before dinner. An extrabiblical tradition involving ceremonial cleanness, not ordinary hygienic practices. Jesus is not breaking the Mosaic law but rather later Jewish traditions that prescribed ritual washing of hands, utensils, and furniture (see Mark 7:2–4). By his example, Jesus implies that his disciples can ignore these traditions.

Study Questions:
- Once again, Jesus is laying into the Pharisees and other religious leaders. Clayton shared five different takeaways from this text on Sunday. First, the GOSPEL is for the IRRELIGIOUS and the RELIGIOUS. Throughout his ministry, Jesus sits and eats with sinners AND hypocrites. BOTH groups need the Gospel! Both are clinging to something that will ultimately bring about their destruction. In our political landscape we think in terms of left and right. Which is the irreligious and which is the religious? The answer is YES! Both sides are incomplete. Both sides need the Gospel. When it comes to your political leanings, are you able to recognize that both parties are incomplete pictures of the gospel? Are your beliefs more in line with a political platform or with Scripture?
- One of the hallmarks of Jesus' life and ministry is that he intentionally spent time with people that were nothing like him. This includes both the notorious sinners AND the religious leaders. He spent time with them and also called them to face God's truth. We tend to avoid people that aren't like us and, if we do interact with them, it's to put them on blast. We criticize them on social media or through gossiping about them. This doesn't look much like Jesus. How willing are you to, like Jesus, sit down and talk with people that don't believe the way you do rather than putting them on blast?
Pray:
- That you would align with Scripture over a political party.
- That you would look for opportunities to spend time with people that aren't like you.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
