This Week's City 7:

6. Is the Bible God’s word? Jesus proved He is God by rising from the dead and said the Old Testament was God’s word and gave authority to the Apostles to write the words of the New Testament under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit so that all the words of the Bible are God’s Word.
(Matthew 5:18; Luke 24:27, 44; John 14:25-26, 15:27, 16:12-13, 17:20; Acts 2:42; Ephesians 3:5; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21)

Ice-Breaker:

Are there any questions you are processing through as it relates to ProjectONE? What are you most excited about the future of The City?

Discussion Questions:

  • This week we talked about priorities. Abraham and Lot both found themselves in some situations that forced them to choose what was most important to them. While Abraham and Lot were both ambitious, smart men, only Abraham's choices led to increased prosperity, blessing and multiplication. Lot's choices led him to destruction. The first point from Sunday was that motivation, not intention, determines location. Have you seen this principle play out in your own life? In what areas do you have the best intentions, but don't quite see it come to fruition?

  • In Genesis 13, we see that Lot was financially motivated. When he looked at his options, he made his decision based on one factor: Which direction can make me the most money? Financially he might have made a wise decision, but he was showing a disregard and disdain for spiritual things and it led to the destruction of his family. Have there been times in your life that being financially motivated led to you making spiritually unwise decisions?

  • Lot was not only financially motivated, he was also selfishly motivated. He chose what was best for HIM despite the fact that his decision meant having to wrong his uncle. He proves that he has the opposite of a generous heart. He thinks only about HIS prosperity and no one else's. We all can easily slide into selfishness if we aren't careful and live only for ourselves. Talk about the connection between what is in our heart to the choices we make. When you make decisions, big or small, are they all about you and your family? Or do you make sure you are considering everyone else?

  • In contrast to Lot, Abraham was spiritually motivated in his decision making. Instead of prioritizing himself and his family, he prioritized the Kingdom of God. His question had nothing to do with where the best land was. His question was, "God, where do you want me to go?" The difference is HUGE for Abraham, and it is for us as well. Abraham thought about God first and foremost in every decision he made. How does this compare to the way YOU make decisions? Do you bring it to God first? How often are you praying for His wisdom when it comes to decisions you face, both big and small?

  • Abraham also contrasted Lot in that he was selflessly motivated. He actually thought about himself THIRD in his decision. God was first, Lot second. Because of this, God took care of Abraham. His selflessness was rewarded. Lot was motivated by a WHAT while Abraham was motivated by a WHO. When it comes to decisions about money, relationships, etc., what, or who, comes first? Does God get the first and best of all you have or receive? Do you think of yourself as an owner or a steward of all you've been blessed with?

Prayer Topics:

  • That we would be spiritually motivated in life, not financially motivated.
  • That we would consider others when we make decisions in our life.
  • That we would bring our decisions to God FIRST.
  • That God would get the first and best of all we have.
