Hello This is a Test

Scripture Reading:

Luke 11:14-16
One day Jesus cast out a demon from a man who couldn’t speak, and when the demon was gone, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed, 15 but some of them said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.” 16 Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

11:14 a demon that was mute. The demon in some way prohibited the man from speaking. The demon is distinguished from “Satan” (v. 18), who is the prince of demons. the mute man spoke. Proof that the demon has been cast out.
11:15 He casts out demons by … the prince of demons. The Pharisees were unable to recognize that God was doing something unique in the teaching and works of Jesus, so they attributed his powers to the only other existing source, since they could not deny the reality of the miraculous works that Jesus had done. But the truthfulness of Jesus’ teachings, the moral excellence of his character, and his ministry of doing good should have convinced them otherwise (cf. 7:16; John 3:2; 9:31–33).
11:16 kept seeking … a sign. Jesus knew that no sign would overcome an unwillingness to believe.

Study Questions:

  • In Luke 11, we see the crowds trying to poke holes in Jesus ministry. They couldn't possibly deny the miracles they had seen with their own eyes, so they had to try to tear it down in another way by suggesting He was in cahoots with satan. If they were to admit that it was the power of God at work among them, then they would have to concede that Jesus was who He said He was... God incarnate. Why do you think the crowds were starting to turn on Jesus? What was at the heart of their refusal to accept him as Messiah? Are you ever slow to accept the truth of God in your own life?

  • They just couldn't bring themselves to give Him credit. We can actually do the same thing in our lives. Many times we fail to give God credit for blessings, answered prayers or miracles that are right under our noses. What are some things in your life that could be God moving or answering prayers but you have failed to give Him credit and glory?

Pray:

  • That you would be quick to accept His truth in your life.
  • That you would look for every opportunity to give God glory.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

3. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? Since “all have sinned” and the “wages of sin is death,” Jesus had to die on the cross to pay the fine for my sin so I could be right with God.
