Scripture Reading:

Luke 11:1-2
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:
“Father, may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

11:2 Father is Patēr in Greek and ’Abba’ in Aramaic (Mark 14:36; Rom. 8:15–16; Gal. 4:6–7). Hallowed be your name is a request that God’s name would be honored and treated with reverence. His name includes his reputation and all that is said about him. Your kingdom come has a twofold emphasis: (1) it is first a prayer that God’s rule and reign would continually advance in people’s hearts and lives until the day Jesus returns and brings the kingdom in perfect fullness; (2) thus it also refers to the future consummation of the kingdom already realized in part by Jesus’ coming (Luke 11:20).

Study Questions:

  • Beginning our prayers the way Jesus modeled leads us to begin by acknowledging who God is and desiring to have HIS Kingdom come to earth. It's not about our kingdoms or our ways, it's about His! He is supremely powerful, infinitely holy, and the only sovereign King of the universe. This should help put us in the right frame of mind before we start asking for things. And having the right PERSPECTIVE of God may also give us the FAITH to believe that he can do what we need him to do. How do you think this shift in perspective might affect the level of faith in your prayers? How might it even change WHAT you pray for?

  • Beginning your prayers with this heart posture also puts us in our rightful place. Referring to God as "Father," recognizing His holiness, and submitting to His Kingdom automatically puts us in the position of humbling ourselves before our Mighty God. This is where we should live; with hearts fully submitted to Him. Remember, the purpose of prayer is to submit our will, not impose it. Practically speaking, what does a life humbly submitted to God look like? How might this heart posture affect your attitudes and decisions throughout the day?

***Expanded, guided prayer time***

Pray:

  • Father, I pray that today you would give me the proper perspective as I come to you in prayer. Today is all about you and your Kingdom, not mine. Give me the faith to pray BIG prayers. Give me the boldness to come to you with big, seemingly impossible situations because I know that there is nothing you can't do.

  • I pray that you would help me to humble myself before you today. Help me to walk in humility and worship. I fully surrender my heart and my will to you, Lord. Use me and speak through me as I submit to you in every situation I might encounter.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
(Luke 1:1-4; Acts 26:26; 1 John 1:1-4, Josephus, Clement, Hegesippus, Tertullian, Origen, Polycarp)
