Scripture Reading:

Matthew 11
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

11:28 Come to me is an invitation to trust Jesus personally, not merely to believe historical facts about him. All who labor and are heavy laden refers in the immediate context to those oppressed by the burden of religious legalism imposed on people by the scribes and Pharisees. But the wider application is that Jesus provides “rest for your souls” (v. 29)—that is, eternal rest for all who seek forgiveness of their sins and freedom from the crushing legalistic burden and guilt of trying to earn salvation by good works.
11:29 yoke. The wooden frame joining two animals (usually oxen) for pulling heavy loads was a metaphor for one person’s subjection to another, and a common metaphor in Judaism for the law. The Pharisaic interpretation of the law, with its extensive list of proscriptions, had become a crushing burden (cf. 23:4) but was believed by the people to be of divine origin. Jesus’ yoke of discipleship, on the other hand, brings rest through simple commitment to him (cf. 1 John 5:3).

Study Questions:

  • In Luke 10, we saw Mary and Martha's contrasting styles. We've talked about it each day this week. So what's the solution? We need to be like Mary, sitting at the feet of Jesus, but work still has to get done, right? We must find a balance. Clayton suggested that we worship like Mary and then work like Martha. We need Mary's heart and Martha's hands. What do you think this looks like, practically, in your own life?

  • We all get stressed out and run down. We must get better at taking a breath and sitting at the feet of Jesus. He's promised us that we can bring our burdens to him. We can come boldly to the throne of our God and he's promised us grace when we need it most. What do your priorities look like? Is your schedule running you or are you running your schedule? Do you need to plan for more Jesus time every day? What step do you need to take to make a change?

Pray:

  • That you would have the heart of Mary.
  • That you would make time for your relationship with Jesus.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time and Paul.
