Scripture Reading:

Luke 9
28 About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. 31 They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about his exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and the others had fallen asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

9:29 his face was altered. The transfiguration is not an illumination of Jesus from the outside (cf. Ex. 34:29–35) but from the inside. dazzling white (lit., “bright as a flash of lightning”). The transfiguration provides a glimpse of the future glory of the Christ (Luke 9:20), the Son of Man, at his second coming (vv. 26–27) when he comes in the cloud of the glory of God. Cf. v. 26; 21:27; 2 Pet. 1:16–18; Rev. 1:7. It likewise gives a glimpse into the reality that Christ is the transcendent Son of God, sent by the Father for the salvation of his people—i.e., for all who believe in him, both Jews and Gentiles.
9:30 Moses and Elijah represent the Law and the Prophets; their appearance refutes the incorrect guesses of vv. 8, 19, indicating that Jesus is the fulfillment of both.
9:31 Jesus’ departure (Gk. exodos) is his future death, resurrection, and ascension (all of which would take place at Jerusalem).
9:33–34 Let us make three tents. This suggestion is a mistake, as indicated by Luke’s comment (not knowing what he said) and the Father’s pronouncement (“this is my Son, my Chosen One,” v. 35, confirming v. 20). The cloud is a manifestation of God’s presence.

Study Questions:

  • A few days later, Jesus took Peter, James and John up on a mountain. These men got to witness Jesus, whose appearance had completely changed right before their eyes, have a conversation with Moses and Elijah. God's glory radiated through him and the disciples where able to catch a small glimpse of who he really was. Jesus was ALL God and ALL man. He was God in a body. So that means he has all the same infinite value and worth as God himself. He is infinitely holy, righteous and powerful. Peter, James and John were in absolute awe of what they saw. But think about this...they had been asleep. Had they not woken up they would've completely missed this monumental event. When was the last time you were in awe of God's greatness? Have you ever fallen asleep spiritually? What experiences with God could you be at risk of missing out on because you aren't awake and looking to him on a daily basis?

  • As Moses and Elijah start to leave, Peter (surprise, surprise) blurts out, "It's wonderful for us to be here!" He was overcome in the moment with what he was experiencing and getting to witness and he didn't want it to be over! He didn't want to go back down the mountain, back to real life. When was the last time you were in God's presence in such a real and tangible way that you didn't want it to end? When was the last time you were so in the moment with God's Spirit, and it was so sweet, that you just wanted to escape real life and enjoy him a little longer? How do we facilitate more of these moments in our lives?

Pray:

  • That you would stay awake spiritually, ready to experience all he has for you.
  • That you would learn to enjoy his presence so much that you don't want to leave.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
