Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
9:1–2 And he called the twelve together. See 6:13. For power and authority, see 4:36; for power to heal, see 5:17. Some think this power and authority was for the duration of this mission, as its absence in 9:40 and the equipping in 24:49 and Acts 1:8 suggest. It is manifested in their casting out demons, curing diseases, and proclaiming the kingdom of God. The close relationship between “the kingdom of God” and “the gospel” is shown in Luke 9:6, where the work of the disciples is described as “preaching the gospel and healing”. he sent them out. The verbal form (Gk. apostellō) of the noun “apostle” (Gk. apostolos).
Study Questions:
- In Chapter 9 we see we see a passing of the torch from Jesus to the 12. Obviously the One who created the universe in six days could have continued to minister effectively on his own. Instead, Jesus chose to multiply his ministry by using the 12 men whom he had called to be apostles. This basically became and internship that would prepare them to minister later on when he was gone. Practically speaking, we could all stand to learn something from this simple principle of passing the torch. What skill or value can you pass to someone else?
- We all have influence over someone. Whether it's at work or at home or a friend group, someone looks up to us. It's important as disciples of Jesus to ask ourselves this question: How am i stewarding my influence for the Kingdom? When it comes to your children or employees or someone you have influence over, what are something you can start to impart to them? How can you show them Jesus?
Pray:
- That you would look to pass something on to someone.
- That you would steward your influence well.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
