Scripture Reading:
Luke 8:22-25
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. 23 As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. 25 Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?”
The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
8:22–25 Jesus Calms a Storm. windstorm. See notes on Matt. 8:23–24; Mark 4:37. On the similarities to Jonah 1:4–5, see note on Mark 4:38. Although rebuked for lack of faith (Luke 8:25), the disciples were aware that, whereas they were helpless in the storm, Jesus was not, so they went to him. Jesus rebuked the wind and … waves, revealing that he has authority over nature, just as the Lord God does (cf. Ps. 107:29). Where is your faith? See notes on Matt. 8:26; Mark 4:40. For were afraid, and … marveled, see Luke 1:21 and note on Matt. 8:27. The account culminates with the question, Who then is this who exercises lordship over nature itself? (Luke 8:25)
Study Questions:
- In Luke 8:22 we see the story of the disciples getting caught in a storm. Even thought they are with Jesus, right where they are supposed to be, they faced a literal storm. They faced real and legitimate fear. Genesis 3 tells us that the ground is cursed because of sin. Romans 8 tells us that all creation is subjected to this curse. What are some ways that this curse is evident in our culture today?
- The first takeaway from Sunday was that Jesus give us glimpse of the coming PARADISE. We are guaranteed to experience storms in our lives. But, ultimately, the storm is still subject to the word and authority of Jesus. With one word, Jesus brought calm to the storm. This is but a taste of when the earth will one day be redeemed, a new earth. All creation is subject to God's curse, but all creation is looking forward to and longing for the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay. Jesus will ultimately bring calm to the storms. So Jesus asks us today, "Where is your faith?" Maybe the storms of life have derailed you. Maybe you just need to catch a glimpse of the power of Jesus over a particular storm in your life?
Pray:
- That you would remember that Jesus is Lord, even in the storms.
- That when you face storms your faith would be in Jesus.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
