Scripture Reading:

Romans 3:21-22
21 But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

3:21 The righteousness of God has been manifested now, i.e., in the period of salvation history inaugurated through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On the righteousness of God, see note on 1:17. Here in ch. 3 it refers to the morally right character of God that is clearly shown in his saving action by which human beings may stand in the right before God as the divine judge. This righteousness has been revealed apart from the law, which means that it is not based on human obedience to the works of the law. Paul may also intend to say it is not based on the Sinai covenant. Even though God’s saving righteousness is apart from the law, the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it. In other words, the OT Scriptures prophesied this very way of salvation (see 1:2).
3:22 This right standing with God is available to all who believe, whether Jew or Gentile.

Study Questions:

  • In the Old Covenant, people were only made right with God through the ritualistic sacrifice of an animal to atone for the sin. So Paul here is explaining the difference between then and now. Now you aren't made right by keeping the law. You are made right ONLY by faith in Jesus. Do you ever judge your relationship with God in terms of the things you did that day? Like if you messed up you feel like you aren't right with him, but if you read your Bible that day you feel like you are right with him? What is the danger in this type of thinking?

  • "No matter who we are..." Verse 22 says that anyone can be made right with God if they place their faith in Jesus. ANYONE. No one is ever too far gone or has done too many bad things that God can't reach them. His grace is bigger than anything we've ever done or could ever do. Stop and think about your biggest regrets, mistakes or sins. Now spend some time thinking about how amazing it is that God's grace completely covers them and that your slate was wiped clean when you committed your life to him. Pray and thank God for his amazing grace!

Pray:

  • That you would remember you are saved by faith ALONE, not by your works.
  • That you would remain grateful for God's amazing grace.

This Week's City 7:

3. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? Since “all have sinned” and the “wages of sin is death,” Jesus had to die on the cross to pay the fine for my sin so I could be right with God.
