Hello This is a Test

Scripture Reading:

Luke 7:31-34
31 “To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them? 32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ 35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it.”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

7:31–34 This generation does not refer to everyone then living but to the leaders and others who rejected both John the Baptist and Jesus, and who were still the dominant force in the culture. In their rejection of both the “ascetic” John and the “non-ascetic” Jesus, they were like children refusing to play either a sad or a happy game.

Study Questions:

  • Jesus is looking for people with childLIKE faith, not childISH faith. In verse 31, Jesus says we are like children. We complain when we don't get our way. We complain about God and doubt him when we don't get the answer we are looking for. We say, "God, I believe you are GOOD and COMPASSIONATE, so you MUST answer me!" This kind of faith is childish and selfish. Have you ever been guilty of childish faith? In what area of your life do you need to grow your trust in the sovereignty of God?

  • True disciples are always learning, always growing, always moving towards Jesus. Many Christians today are stuck in spiritual immaturity, and they are satisfied. They are ok with their elementary understanding of God and who Jesus is. They've barely scratched the surface of what God might want to do in and through them and they pull back and shut down. They stop short, content with their perpetual immaturity. Can you honestly say that you are doing all you can to grow spiritually? Or are you satisfied with where you are? What does it look like to seek daily to grow in your relationship with God?

Pray:

  • That you would have a childlike faith, not a childish faith.
  • That you would be daily growing in your relationship with God.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
(Matthew 24:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Revelation 22:18-19)
