Scripture Reading:

Luke 7:1-10
When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum. 2 At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death. 3 When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave. 4 So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said, 5 “for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”
6 So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor. 7 I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 8 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” 10 And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

7:2 centurion. A Roman officer in charge of a hundred men.
7:3 elders of the Jews. Local Jewish officials. The villages of Galilee had their own elders, who presided as local judges (see Apocrypha, Judith 6:14–16).
7:4–5 The Jewish officials were saying, in effect, “He is a kind man who loves our people and helped build our synagogue. Please help him.” The “synagogue” in Capernaum is the same as the one mentioned in 4:33.
7:6–7 I am not worthy reveals the centurion’s humility. Say the word reveals his great faith.
7:8 The centurion responds, in effect, “I too can do things because of the authority given me, so how much more can you!”
7:9 Not even in Israel foreshadows the entry of Gentiles into the kingdom of God. such faith. Jesus commends the centurion (who is a Gentile) for his humble faith (v. 6)—one of the few places where Jesus commends the way in which someone approaches him.
7:10 they found the servant well. As in all healing miracles in Scripture, the proof of the miracle is described.

Study Questions:

  • Clayton's first point on Sunday was, "Jesus moves in response to your FAITH." If you haven't watched it yet, do that now in the app! In Luke 7, Jesus chooses to heal the servant of a high-ranking Roman official. Jesus was amazed at the faith of this Gentile Centurion. So at the very word of Jesus, the servant was healed. How often have you prayed for a miracle from God? Do you have faith that he can still heal and do miracles? Have you ever seen one?

  • If you have kids, you know that if they get what they want, they're happy and think you love them. When they don't get what they want, they throw a fit and think you don't love them. In our lives, we don't always get what we want, when we want it. Many times when it comes to things we're praying for or things that happen in our lives that are out of our control, we can struggle with why God isn't stepping in to do something to help. We can begin to think he doesn't care. If you feel this way at times, please come back tomorrow and the rest of the week for the rest of the story! Spend some time today confessing these feelings to God. We serve a BIG God, he can take your questions and doubts!

Pray:

  • That God would grow your faith.
  • That you would learn to have BIG faith in your BIG God.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
(Matthew 24:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Revelation 22:18-19)
