Scripture Reading:

Luke 6:46-49
46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

A parable brings the Sermon on the Mount to a close as Jesus calls for his audience to decide between himself and the religious establishment, drawing a dividing line between himself and any other foundation for life. The evidence of whether one is truly a believer is in whether one does the words of Jesus (cf. James 1:22–23 and 2:20–22). wise man. Disciples who build their lives on the bedrock of Jesus and his message of the kingdom of heaven are truly wise, regardless of the shifting cultural or religious fashions.
The rain fell, and the floods came. During the hot summer months, the sand around the Sea of Galilee was hard on the surface. But a wise builder knew that he needed to dig several feet below the surface to the bedrock in order to establish the foundation for his house.
On the sand. The religious establishment had embraced a mere surface righteousness built on an unstable foundation of religious pretense.
Confession apart from obedience is worthless (cf. Matt. 7:21; Luke 8:21; 11:28).

Study Questions:

  • Jesus' next illustration is all about building on the sand. When we get our priorities out of whack, it's like building our life on the sand. Sandcastles are cool for a moment, but a life built on the ROCK lasts forever. Your fruit reveals your reality, your foundation reveals your reality, and so your fruit reveals your foundation. Many of us have good intentions, but our realities say something totally different. Are there some areas of your spiritual life where you have be best intentions, but those don't match up with reality? What do you need to tweak or change?

  • Intentions are an interesting thing. Think about it for a minute. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has GOOD intentions. Especially about GOOD things. Things like being healthy, loving our spouses well, being a good parent, being a honest employee or a boss with integrity. And let's not forget about your walk with Jesus. What kind of Christian wouldn't have the best intentions when it comes to living the way Jesus instructed? Who doesn't want to give their all for the One that gave it all for them? But like anything else in life, intentions are meaningless unless there are actions that back them up. What kind of Christian do you want to be? What does your fruit say about the seriousness of your intentions? Where are you falling short or being lazy? What can you do about it?

Pray:

  • That you would build your life on the ROCK of Jesus.
  • That you would follow through with your good intentions.

This week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

6. Is the Bible God’s word? Jesus proved He is God by rising from the dead and said the Old Testament was God’s word and gave authority to the Apostles to write the words of the New Testament under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit so that all the words of the Bible are God’s Word.
