Scripture Reading:
Luke 6:41-42
41 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 42 How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:
6:41–42 speck … log. The hyperbolic nature of these verses refers back to the judgmental attitude of Luke 6:37. It is clear that not all judging is excluded, for when one sees one’s own sinfulness, then others can be helped with the specks in their eyes. At the same time, Christians need to take great care concerning their own faults, not censuring others for things that they are guilty of doing themselves. Ultimately the one who feels grieved and humbled over his own sin can help remove the “speck” from others. What Jesus does rule out is pride that views oneself as better than others (cf. Gal. 6:1).
Jesus may have drawn on his background as a carpenter for his metaphor of a log in your own eye, which of course was hyperbole (intentional overstatement; cf. Matt. 5:29–30). then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Study Questions:
- The big idea from Sunday was, "If your heart isn’t broken over YOUR sin, don’t approach people about THEIR’S." Jesus isn't saying don't judge at all. He's saying pay attention to your heart and how you are relating to other people. Think about your life and take an inventory. A few questions for you to consider: Is there some sin in your life that you haven't dealt with? Do you need more accountability? Should you find someone you love and trust and ask them for help in an area of your life where you're struggling? Have you had the wrong attitude with both Christians and non-Christians in your life? Are there some relationships that you need to revisit and seek restoration? Is there another Christian in your life that you haven't been willing to confront about their sin because you thought it wasn't your place?
- Spend a little extra time today doing a heart check. Ask God to help you answer the above questions. Be willing to take an honest look at yourself and ask him if something in you needs to change. Write down your thoughts or what you feel like God is saying to you in a journal. Then make an action plan... what do you need to do first? Who do you need to set up a coffee or lunch with?
Pray:
- That your heart would be broken over your own sin.
- That you would deal with others in your life with humility.
This week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
