Hello This is a Test

Tuesday Devo

Scripture:

Luke 6:29
29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

6:29 strikes you on the cheek. An insulting slap. Offer the other also is not intended as a command for every circumstance (Luke 6:30) but is a vivid illustration of how love for one’s enemies should look. This verse should not be understood as a prohibition against governments using military or police force, since in this context Jesus is addressing individual conduct. takes away your cloak. The point of both examples is that, even though believers will often be subject to abuse or taken advantage of, they are to face such rejection differently from the world, that is, by being generous and compassionate rather than retaliating.

Study Questions:

  • The second point from Sunday's message was, "Real love is rooted in the mission of God." This means we have no human enemies. Jesus is telling us that true followers, when they are mistreated, are not only to NOT retaliate, but they should be marked by radical generosity, kindness and blessing. This is the kind of love that made people take notice that something about these Jesus followers was different.  We don't vilify our enemies. Jesus was and is the perfect representation of this kind of love as he allowed himself to be beaten, mocked and killed by the very people he was giving his life for. How do you typically respond when you are treated unfairly or lied about? How do we curb our desire to get even or defend ourselves?

  • In the first century, who was it that was oppressing the Church? The Romans. And do you know who was coming to faith in large numbers? The Romans! Christians, despite being persecuted for their faith, refused to vilify the Romans or call them enemies. This is quite the opposite from today's social and political climate where it seems everyone is vilified and divided. Think about someone in your life that has done something against you. How could you apply these truths to that relationship? How can you refuse to be an enemy of that person and instead show love and grace towards them? How might that affect your relationship with God? How might that affect THEIR relationship with God?

Pray:

  • That you would learn to love like Jesus and remain defenseless.
  • That you would refuse to make enemies of people.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit it to memory!

4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
