Scripture Reading:

Luke 6:21, 25
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh."
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep."

Commentary from the ESV Study Bible:

who weep now. Cf. “mourn” in Matt. 5:4 and note. “Now” indicates that in the consummated kingdom God will wipe away every tear (Rev. 7:17; 21:4). Instead of weeping there will be laughter (Ps. 126:1–2).
Woe to you who laugh now is not a condemnation of all joy and laughter, only the condescending, boastful, or mocking laughter of the callous, complacent rich, who care little for others or for God. They shall mourn and weep when God’s judgment comes.

Study Questions:

  • This one is all about repentance. Blessed are those who realize they are poor and hungry, and therefore they are broken and overwhelmed with grief. This is the emotional breakdown that should follow recognition of our spiritual bankruptcy and lack of righteousness. And WOE to those who laugh now, for you will mourn. Jesus tells us that on the day of judgment there will be many who think they're good with God and have just been fooling themselves. They are heading for destruction and yet they are blind to it. When was the last time you were truly broken over your sin?

  • The sobering reality is, Jesus said there will be many “sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness” (Matt. 8:11–12), in that place [hell] there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” You’re laughing now, but you will mourn and weep when God’s judgment comes; and it WILL come. How crazy would you look if you were physically on fire and laughing about it? Spiritually speaking, this is what it looks like. And this is the group Jesus is sending a warning to. Our churches are full of ppl whose lives are unraveling but they put the mask on, smile and pretend. Are you ever tempted to put on the mask and just pretend everything is ok even when things are a mess? Why is that? Is there anything you need to let God deal with in your life today?

Pray:

  • That you would be broken over your sin and live a lifestyle of repentance.
  • That you would make sure your relationship with God is where it needs to be.
