Scripture:
Psalm 22
14 My life is poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax,
melting within me.
15 My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.
16 My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs;
an evil gang closes in on me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
My enemies stare at me and gloat.
18 They divide my garments among themselves
and throw dice for my clothing.

Commentary:
22:12–18 I Am Surrounded by Enemies. The song returns to describing the situation: enemies who are bent on evil like bulls (v. 12), a lion (v. 13), and dogs (v. 16) leave the singer without energy (v. 14) or strength (v. 15). Peter borrows the image of a “roaring lion” (v. 13) for the devil (1 Pet. 5:8), the evil enemy behind all evil enemies of the faithful.
22:17 I can count all my bones, that is, “My flesh is so wasted away that my bones poke through my skin.” They stare, that is, the enemies (see v. 18).
22:18 This verse is quoted in John 19:24 (cf. Matt. 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34); see note on Psalm 22.
22:18 The soldiers around the cross divide Christ’s garments (Matt. 27:35 and John 19:23–24).

Questions:
- As we said, Psalm 22 is a prophetic psalm pointing to what was to come as Jesus was crucified. Jesus' crying out in abandonment, the description of mocking and the shaking of heads, Jesus saying He was thirsty, the guards gambling for His clothes, the accurate description of crucifixion some 400 years before its invention... and, of course, "It is FINISHED!" How do all these accurate prophecies affect your confidence in and love for Scripture? How often are you looking for signs of Jesus when you read the Old Testament?
- Look at the Bible cross-reference graph in the message notes on the app. The lines represent all the times Scripture points back to itself and fulfills prophecies. This is proof of divine inspiration. How would you assess your level of trust in the inerrancy and infallibility of the Word of God?
Prayer Topics:
- That God would give you a renewed passion and appreciation for His Word.
- That you would learn to trust Scripture above all else.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
