25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Commentary:
1:25 the law of liberty (cf. 2:12). In James, the “law” and the “word” are two different ways of describing the same reality. Earlier, the “word of truth” (1:18) is the gospel of Christ, and the “law” here refers to the OT law as it has been interpreted and fulfilled in Christ. Though the OT law was “holy and righteous and good” (Rom. 7:12), it had no power by itself to enable sinful people to conform to it. Thus, the OT law did not liberate God’s people but enslaved them, as Paul taught (Gal. 3:10–4:7; cf. Rom. 2:1–3:20; 5:20; 6:14–15; 7:1–25). But the law is one of “liberty” when it comes along with the word of the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit to change hearts. See also note on James 2:12.

Questions:
- The takeaway from Sunday was about encouraging us to trust that God has our best in mind. In fact, his boundaries aren't to limit us or to keep us from having fun. On the contrary, His BOUNDARIES are for our BEST and His FENCES bring us FREEDOM. Do you truly believe this? Do you have full confidence that everything that God does in your life is for your ultimate best and His ultimate glory? Do you really trust Him even when you don't agree with Him?
- What has God been saying to you this week in our Study of Jude? What needs to change?
Prayer Topics:
- That you would learn to delight in God's boundaries.
- That your trust in God would grow through every situation.
This Week's City 7:
Try to commit to memory!
5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
