Scripture:

Psalm 90
13 Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.

Commentary:

90:13–15 Return, i.e., come back to us, turn from your anger (cf. Ex. 32:12). in the morning. Probably a metaphor, where the current situation is the night and the singers look eagerly for the light of morning (cf. Ps. 30:5; 46:5; 59:16; 130:6; 143:8), the time when God will make his steadfast love clear to his people. Then they will be able to rejoice and be glad all their days.

Questions:

  • Moses has spoken of God's judgement, and now his prayerful plea is for God's presence, compassion and mercy. He is asking for God's steadfast love so that they may have JOY. If we are going to follow Him more closely this year, we must realize that He is God and we are not. We must fear him, focus on eternity, and find JOY in His PRESENCE. Joy that comes from God isn't just happiness. It goes much deeper than that. It's a fruit of the Spirit, and just like peace, God can give us joy even in the most trying of circumstances. Joy in your life is a sign to the world of your spiritual maturity. Do you have joy? What would people that know you best say? If you don't have joy, what are you focused on that is stealing it?

  • Reflect on this quote from James Boice: "The only thing that will secure life-long gladness is a heart satisfied with the experience of God’s love.’ This means that nothing will satisfy the human heart ultimately except God.” What or whom are you looking to for satisfaction, validation, or affirmation in your life? Ask God to reveal possible idols.

Prayer Topics:

  • That God would give you joy that only comes from Him.
  • That you would find all you need in your relationship with the Lord.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

2. Are there sources outside the Bible that confirm the Biblical account of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead? Many Roman and Jewish historians have confirmed that the apostles died as martyrs for preaching that they saw Jesus risen from the grave. No one dies for something they know to be a lie.
