Hello This is a Test

Monday Devo

Scripture:

Psalm 19
1 The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
 The skies display his craftsmanship.
 2 Day after day they continue to speak;
 night after night they make him known.
 3 They speak without a sound or word;
 their voice is never heard.
 4 Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
 and their words to all the world.
 God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.
 5 It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding.
 It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.
 6 The sun rises at one end of the heavens
 and follows its course to the other end.
 Nothing can hide from its heat.

Commentary:

19:1–6 The Eloquent Heavens. These verses describe how features of the sky bear witness to their Maker; in so doing, the song directs attention to divine speech that goes out to all humanity. The ode to the sun (vv. 4c–6) follows from the opening, giving a very specific way in which the voice of the heavens is revealed to all mankind; the thought of its scorching heat leads to the next section, the searching and pure law of the Lord.
19:1 The heavens and the sky above (see ESV footnote) recall Genesis 1. The glory of God, i.e., his power, wisdom, and worthiness of honor and worship.
19:1 Revelation of God through nature leaves man with no excuse (Rom. 1:18–23).
19:3 The speech here is that mentioned in v. 2a; its voice is not heard, i.e., all people receive it (although not all attend to it).
19:4 Paul uses these words in Rom. 10:18–19 (see note) to show that all the world has received some kind of message.

Questions:

  • Psalm 19 was written by David... not when he was king, but when he was a lowly shepherd boy. He would've spent just about all his time outside, and to him the beauty around him pointed straight to God. He opens this Psalm by saying, "The wonders of God shout His greatness." When was the last time you truly took in the beauty of God's creation and worshiped Him for it? Take some time today out in God's creation and give Him thanks!

  • Creation is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for the existence of God. Why? Because creation points to a creator. Design points to a designer. There is simply no other logical explanation for the intricacy and fine-tuning of creation. The perfect balance when it comes to gravity, the distance from the sun, oxygen in the air... the list goes on and on! As verse 2 says, "Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard." Even though you can't physically see God, the evidence of His existence is literally everywhere you look. What does it do to your faith knowing there is so much evidence for a Creator? How can we keep from taking all of this for granted?

Prayer Topics:

  • That you would, like David, learn to worship God for the beauty of His creation.
  • That the evidence all around you would grow your faith in Him.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time, and Paul.
(Mark 3:21; John 8:58, 10:30-33, 14:9-11; Acts 9:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:2-3; James 1:1)
