Group Guide

This Week's City 7:

7. How can I trust that the Bible is still God’s Word today? I trust the Bible is still God’s Word today because Jesus rose from the dead, proving He was God and said His words would never pass away. Through the Holy Spirit, God inspired the writing of the Scripture, determined the canon of Scripture and protected the copying of Scripture so that we might know Him and worship Him to this day.
(Matthew 24:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21; Revelation 22:18-19)

Ice-Breaker:

  • What was your first job?

Scripture

2 Corinthians 9
10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.
11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. 12 So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God.
13 As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. 14 And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. 15 Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!

Discussion Questions:

  • This ALL ALL IN series has been about getting in the game and sacrificing for the sake of the mission, just like the church in Macedonia. Paul says their FIRST action was to give themselves "to the Lord and to us." We all sacrifice FOR things and give TO things. And some of those things are worth the sacrifice and some are not. If you took a look through your bank statement and the way you spend your time, what are some things you'd find there that have eternal value? What are some things that do not?

  • In 2nd Corinthians 9:11, Paul says that they will be ENRICHED in every way SO THAT they can always be GENEROUS. God blesses us not just to increase our standard of LIVING, but to increase our standard of GIVING. He blesses you so that He can bless others through you!  Every disciple is a non-profit ministry, and God has made donations to you because He wants you to use them for His mission. If you sit on them or use them only for your own luxuries, you're embezzling His money! He is the owner and you are the steward. How would you grade yourself when it comes to being a faithful steward of God's money? How would HE grade you? Are others being blessed through you, or does the blessing stop with you?

  • Becoming a Christ follower means viewing everything in your life as something to be given, used and multiplied for God's Kingdom. It means a fundamental reshaping of your life around the emergency of the Gospel.  How focused are you on the emergency of the Gospel? What are you doing to make Him known?

  • Clayton challenged us to give our ALL for ETERNITY. We need to be living and giving with eternity in mind. This life is a mist... a vapor. But eternity is forever. The Christian is called to live for eternity, not just this life. Generosity to eternal things makes the most sense in light of eternity. Can you say that you are truly living and giving in a way that makes sense in light of eternity?

  • Finally, we were challenged to give our all for HIM and THEM. First, it's all for Jesus. We give to the church in order to build the church in order to make the name of Jesus famous. And then we give all for THEM. We have been blessed with the Gospel so that those who have never heard will hear. We have been blessed with plenty so that we can be generous to those in need. What has God been speaking to you through this series? Is there anything that is keeping you from going all in? How is He leading you to respond?

Prayer Topics:

  • That we would live for eternity.
  • That we would give because He gave first.
  • That we would become radically generous.
