Hello This is a Test

Thursday Devo

Scripture:

2 Peter 2
9 So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment. 10 He is especially hard on those who follow their own twisted sexual desire, and who despise authority.

Commentary:

2:9–10a Having stated his minor premises, Peter moves now to his major premise (see note on vv. 4–10a): “If” vv. 4–8 are true, then how much more true are vv. 9–10a. God indeed knows how to rescue the godly from trials. In the case of Peter’s audience, this would have evoked hope of divine deliverance from the false teachers and their influence. God also will certainly keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment. He will punish them in a partial, preliminary way before the final day of judgment (cf. Luke 16:23–24; Heb. 9:27). This applies especially to those who engage in defiling passion and who despise authority—probably a reference to false teachers (cf. 2 Pet. 2:12, 18; 3:3; Jude 8, 16, 18).

Questions:

  • Verses 9 and 10 talk of the fact God IS judging people in this present time. He IS punishing people for their wickedness. One of the ways He does this is by allowing people to experience the consequences of their own sin. How have you experienced God's discipline in your life over your own sin?

  • Anytime we feel like we are experiencing God's discipline in our lives, we should examine ourselves to see if there is an action or attitude that we need to repent of. And if there is sin, we should repent and run from it! How often is repentance a part of your prayer life? Would you say that you repent often?

Pray:

  • That you would welcome God's discipline in your life.
  • That you would live a lifestyle of repentance.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

4. Can a person be good enough to go to heaven? No. Because Jesus rose from the dead, proving He is God, I believe a person is saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
