Hello This is a Test

Group Guide

This Week's City 7:

1. Who is Jesus? I believe Jesus is God because Jesus said He is God and proved it by rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples, His brother James, 500 others at one time, and Paul.
(Mark 3:21; John 8:58, 10:30-33, 14:9-11; Acts 9:1-6; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:2-3; James 1:1)

Ice-Breaker:

  • What position were you in your graduating high school class?

Scripture

2 Peter 1
This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. 2 May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. 3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Discussion Questions:

  • Peter begins his 2nd letter reminding the reader of who he is. He WAS a fisherman, but now he is a "slave and apostle of Jesus Christ." When Jesus called Peter to follow Him, he left everything and went. He didn't always do everything right, but meeting and following Jesus changed his life! Jesus even changed his name. A true faith TRANSFORMS. Think back to what your life was like before you met Jesus. How have you changed? What are some of the ways your relationship with Jesus has transformed you?

  • In verse 2, Peter talks about growing in our knowledge of God and Jesus. Growing in your knowledge OF Him produces hunger and passion FOR Him. We must love God with all our heart, soul and MIND! We have referred to this as "knowledge on fire." It isn't knowing things just to know them. It's a knowledge that makes you fall more in love with Him. Assess your relationship with Jesus. Can you truly say you LOVE Him? What is your level of passion for Jesus? If it's lacking, might it be because of your lack of pursuit of the knowledge of Him?

  • Peter says that we have received all we need for living a godly life. It's all right there in the Book! There is no higher truth than that found in Scripture. The knowledge found there is complete, lacking nothing. Clayton talked on Sunday about the SUFFICIENCY of Scripture, which is the belief that it is God's inspired Word. It is our inerrant, sufficient and final authority. Is this true of your life? Is everything you believe, say and do rooted in the truth of God's Word? Is it truly your final authority?

  • Peter says in verse 4 that it's possible for us to "escape the world's corruption caused by human desires." The faith REFORMS us. It is through a growing knowledge of God that we not only have the power to live a godly life, but also a new ability to resist sin through our union with Christ and the indwelling of the Spirit. This is why Jesus said we must be born again; we are all born with a sinful heart, but the faith reforms your heart and desires to be in line with God's design. Jesus practiced TRANSFORMATIONAL inclusion, not AFFIRMATIONAL inclusion. He MEETS you where you are, but he doesn't LEAVE you the way you are. Is your heart being reformed? Are your desires becoming more and more in line with God's design?

  • The big idea was to put YOUR faith in THE faith. The faith is GOD'S way! We don't get to come up with our own way. We are to submit to HIS way. Are you all in on this faith? Are there things holding you back? What is God asking of you through these verses?

Prayer Topics:

  • That we would fully submit to HIS way.
  • That God would transform us through the power of His Word and Spirit.
  • That our faith with be in Him alone.
