Hello This is a Test

Tuesday Devo

Scripture:

1 Peter 3
In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over 2 by observing your pure and reverent lives.

Commentary:

3:1 For a Christian wife to have a different religion than her husband was quite astonishing for that culture. For example, the Greek historian Plutarch (c. a.d. 46–127) said, “A wife should not acquire her own friends, but should make her husband’s friends her own. The gods are the first and most significant friends. For this reason, it is proper for a wife to recognize only those gods whom her husband worships” (Advice to Bride and Groom 19, Moralia 140D). Even though Peter calls on wives to submit to their husbands, it was a different submission than was common in that culture, for the wives’ devotion was first and foremost to Christ.

Questions:

  • Wives: A gospel-centered wife is submitted to her HUSBAND. This is the way God designed marriage to work. But what if he doesn't deserve it? What if he isn't respectable? Peter would say it doesn't matter. The commands here for both husbands and wives are unconditional. And if she is faithful to these commands she will have a positive influence on the husbands life. The gospel-centered wife is COMFORTING, not CONTROLLING or CONTENTIOUS. She honors her husband privately and publicly so that he wants to become what she sees in him. How are you doing in this area as a wife? Do you find it difficult to submit to the leadership of your husband? If so, how can you overcome the hesitation?

  • Husbands: Wives are to submit to the authority of the husband. But to be a godly husband means giving her something worth following. When you are following Jesus, you become easier to follow. Is your heart sold out to Him? Can you say that you love and lead your wife and family with a Jesus-like sacrificial love? Where do you need to grow?

  • Singles: Culture tries to say that men and women are interchangeable and completely the same in every way. But God says each of the two genders are different with unique needs and complimentary roles. What are the dangers in adopting culture's view of gender roles? How can you start right now in becoming "the one" for your future spouse?

Pray:

  • That you would seek to be obedient to scripture in every area of your life, including your marriage.
  • That you would reject culture's definitions of men, women and marraige.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
(Matthew 7:24-27; John 14:6)
