Hello This is a Test

Monday Devo

Scripture:

1 Peter 3
In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over 2 by observing your pure and reverent lives.

Commentary:

3:1 For a Christian wife to have a different religion than her husband was quite astonishing for that culture. For example, the Greek historian Plutarch (c. a.d. 46–127) said, “A wife should not acquire her own friends, but should make her husband’s friends her own. The gods are the first and most significant friends. For this reason, it is proper for a wife to recognize only those gods whom her husband worships” (Advice to Bride and Groom 19, Moralia 140D). Even though Peter calls on wives to submit to their husbands, it was a different submission than was common in that culture, for the wives’ devotion was first and foremost to Christ.

Questions:

  • Wives: A gospel-centered wife is submitted to Christ. Remember, Peter started this section by explaining how the way we live our lives is all "for the Lord's sake." As it pertains to wives, submission to the leadership of your husband has everything to do with HIS fame, HIS name, HIS glory. As a wife, how do you fight against a culture that wants to say men and women are the same? What does it look like to be submitted to Christ in your day to day?

  • Husbands: In the biblical order of things, a wife is to submit to her husband as HE IS SUBMITTED TO CHRIST. God has given husbands and wives different roles and responsibilities, and husbands are ultimately responsible, as the head of the marriage, for its health. Do you make it easy for your wife to submit to your authority? Is your heart fully submitted to the lordship of Christ?

  • Singles: Whether you want to end up getting married or not, your heart needs to be submitted to Jesus in every moment of every day. If you want to someday find a spouse, your life should be about not just FINDING the one, but BECOMING the one. The more surrendered you are to Christ, the more easily He can lead you to who He might have for you. Are you more focused on finding the one or becoming the one? How do you know if you're fully surrendered to Him?

Pray:

  • That you would submit yourself to Jesus' lordship in your life.
  • That God would help you live a life for HIS glory.

This Week's City 7:

Try to commit to memory!

5. Why do I follow Jesus? I follow Jesus because Jesus rose from the dead proving that He is the way, the truth and the life.
(Matthew 7:24-27; John 14:6)
